experiment with shades of white - and add texture

A white on white colour scheme can be beautiful, but you have to consider textures and shades of white so that the room doesn't feel flat or boring. There is plenty of texture in this dining room from the linens, to the table to the wall treatment and even the shiny chair and rugged pottery.

There are several things that makes this work, yet they are are durable and wipe-able: smooth beadboard and subway tiles, shiny appliance, detailed mill-work and textural plants.

The candle light adds so much to this white space because of the gorgeous cut-outs in the holders and the tapered candle sticks. The blurred backsplash is a take on white, so think of grey (or beige, whatever your preference) as a shade of white to add depth and interest.

Cottage in shades of white and hits of wood to keep it warm and inviting.

This traditional living room would feel very different if treated with colourful walls and fabrics, but it works in all white because of the metals, woods and pops of colour in the flowers.
